Florida firm buys total of 1.28 million acres in major Nevada land deal (Reno Gazette Journal :: Dec 8, 2011)

A Florida investment firm has bought 1.28 million acres of land and mineral rights — larger than Rhode Island — in pockets adjacent to Interstate 80 and the Union Pacific Railroad from east of Sparks to the Utah line.

The $31 million deal, announced Thursday by CBRE Group, includes full ownership of 483,000 acres and mineral rights on another 800,000 acres for Fountain Investments Inc. of Miramar Beach, Fla.

“The enormity of it, it’s interesting to see,” said Grant Sims, managing partner of CBRE’s Reno office who assisted the company’s Minneapolis-based national land services office in the deal. “We sell a lot of land around the world. This is probably one of the largest sales in the continental U.S. It’s 12 percent of all the privately owned land in Nevada.” (Read More)

Clean Energy: TMCC launches renewables curriculum (Reno Gazette Journal :: Dec 6, 2011)

Jim Nichols isn't wearing shades.

But the physical sciences instructor and project director for Truckee Meadows Community College's geothermal program might need to if the future for renewable energy is as bright as TMCC expects it to be.

How bright? Enough that the college is working hard to set up an energy technologies curriculum that it hopes will be up and running within a year or so.

The ambitious project will be supported by four key pillars -- or "tracks" as they like to say in academia. Those would be geothermal, solar, wind and energy efficiency. (Read More)

National Geothermal Summit comes to Reno; tours visit Ormat plant (Reno Gazette Journal :: Aug 16, 2011)

It’s a sunny, summer day in August, and several employees inside a control room are clearly feeling the heat in more ways than one.

As workers at Ormat Technologies’ Steamboat Geothermal Power Plant Complex in Reno, the control room guys are charged with overseeing an operation that generates 89 megawatts of energy — enough electricity to support the entire residential load of Reno.

The state-of-the-art equipment in the room also allows the employees to monitor other Ormat operations, including a waste heat system that creates energy by harnessing excess heat from a natural gas pipeline that runs from Canada to Chicago. (Read More)

Record increase in gold prices a boon for Nevada (Reno Gazette Journal :: Aug 8, 2011)

Nevada’s cash-strapped government stands to gain from the ongoing run-up in gold prices that reached a record $1,713 per ounce on Monday, industry observers believe.

The state’s net proceeds of mines and minerals tax, whose formula for gold mines is tied to market value, is split almost evenly between state government and the counties where it’s generated. (Read More)

UNR geothermal drilling program adds 3-D imaging (Reno Gazette Journal :: Jul 11, 2011)

A Department of Energy-funded geothermal program at the University of Nevada, Reno, which is designed to enhance exploration methodologies and reduce the risk of drilling nonproductive wells, is entering its second phase.

The project, based in the university's Bureau of Mines and Geology in the College of Science, is developing a catalogue of favorable structure elements for several sites deemed potentially viable for geothermal. These include geothermal system fault patterns and models, along with site-specific targeting based on fault analysis. (Read More)
